PWD's in Australia

by Jane Anderson

Australians with PWD's

The Portuguese Water Dog has been present in Australia for over 20 years, although has only made an appearance on the show scene within the last 10 years. The first litter of Portuguese Water Dogs in Australia was bred by Bluegrace nearly 10 years ago.

Whilst under specialist judges, our PWD's are the top winning PWDs in the country, it is with great pride that I provide lovely family pets. This is first and foremost.

There are now over 200 Portuguese Water Dogs in Australia. On average, within Australia, there are only 3-4 litters born per year now, with some of these being exported to help develop the gene pools in other countries. To see a list of Breeders we recommend in Australia click here.

We have a long term strategy to produce what we believe is the perfect Portuguese Water Dog. This work requires extensive research, travel, and networking to ensure that we take as many of the "correct" steps as possible, and learn as much as possible from our errors. We keep track of our progress with a full health and quality register, which are more than welcome to view when you visit us.

If you are interested in learning more about our dogs, or applying to join our waiting list, please email us .

There is a group of us now working together here for the good of the breed. We welcome new pet and show people. There are a couple of email lists we have established, and simply click on the links below if you'd like to subscribe:

Australians with PWD's The issues we are currently working with are:

      • Having a diverse gene pool
      • Recognising and managing health issues (Since health issues will never be eliminated in any breed, these issues have to be noted, measured where possible, and managed. To remove all dogs from breeding programs that had any health issues would mean the end of not just this breed, but all breeds.)
      • Educating people in the attributes of the breed
      • Only breeding from good quality dogs. This means that all dogs that are not show quality should be sold on spay/neuter terms, and only the best of the show quality dogs should be bred from.
      • Ensuring that our dogs are placed in good homes.

We encourage child handlers to take our dogs!
