My advice to any of you starting out with dogs - get together a group of fabulous people like we have at Bluegrace, and work together without ego, pooling your resources to get the most out of what little you have. The planning period was essential to ensure that the complexity of the PWD issues were well understood, and that a solid foundation was gained in understand type, temperament, and health issues. Of course, this learning will continue. There are now approximately 200 Portuguese Water Dogs in Australia, with a very small number of breeders. Whilst there are about 30 pwds currently being shown around Australia, there are only a handful that are proving good enough, in our eyes, to breed from. It is critical to only breed from the best dogs. We find with our high standards, there is possibly only 1 dog in every 2 litters which is truly good enough to go on to breed from, and that's only after it's passed our strict standards for show status, temperament, gait, conformation, and health. In conjunction with breeders overseas, we have sought, and continue to seek compatible blood lines. Whether our dogs are for the show ring or the couch, we aim to breed exceptional pwd's that each of our owners can be proud of. We are working to improve both the health and quality of our dogs.
